WDSP Overview

How it all started

When ATMA SEVA was founded the primary mission and focus was HIV prevention and education outreach programs. (Click here to read more about our history)  In 2009 those projects came to an end after nine successful years.  Wat Doi Saket had been a major partner in the outreach programs and when they finished ATMA SEVA still wanted to help and be involved.  We asked Phra maha Insorn, principle of Wat Doi Saket, how we could continue to help.  His answer was ‘better English for the novice monks’.  Since Wat Doi Saket is the Buddhist temple we have been working with since 2000, we felt that the 'Wat Doi Saket project' was an appropriate and fitting name.

What is the Wat Doi Saket project?

The Wat Doi Saket project is a cultural exchange program where participants have the opportunity to live and teach English to Buddhist monks in Northern Thailand.  We are working with eighteen Buddhist temples and three government schools (Thai public schools).  The WDSP is a very serious EFL program and has it’s own custom curriculum which is geared entirely for conversation.  We provide all teaching materials and resources, and our staff assists each volunteer with their lesson plans.  We also record what each volunteer teaches so when the next volunteer starts there is a smooth transition and the children have consistent lessons.  Outside of teaching we strive very hard to expose participants to authentic Thai culture.  Doi Saket is a small district eighteen kilometers outside of Chiang Mai city. Transportation between Doi Saket and Chiang Mai city is very accessible and cheap.
